070 – Vipers Bugloss

Found in sandy dunes, this flower was once used to treat the bites of the sand viper, hence the first part of the name. The other part of the name, “bugloss” is derived from the Greek word bou (meaning cow or ox) and the Latin word glosso (meaning tongue). These refer to its leaves, which could be said to be shaped like an ox-tongue.

Imaginitive bunch aren’t they, these botanists?
