In the Usagi Yojimbo stories by Stan Sakai, the Woodcutter is representative of the hardworking, downtrodden worker and is often seen going about his business in the background or being bullied by the Samurai classes. Occasionally the stories focus on them and we see how difficult their lives are.
I took this from the first volume of the Usagi Yojimbo saga and it was coloured by Elena in Coloured pencil.
Let’s hear it for the woodcutters! This one definitely looks irate – no doubt about it. Do they ever fight for their rights in the stories?
The Woodcutters tend to have few options in the feudal Japanese era in which the stories are set but they do sometimes rise up against the leaders but, because they are unskilled in combat, have little chance against the samurai
Yikes! Outta his/her?? way! I’m sure in the original it’s a guy…..
