This card is a birthday postcard sent back in 1929 and comes complete with a lovely one penny stamp and a message from Grandma and Grandpa.
There are no markings on it telling you exactly where the postcard was depicting, and I wonder what the place looks like now. In my experience, Gravesend looked nothing like this last time I was there.
I guess that this is what birthday cards would have looked like back before the big card shops got in on the act.
Always really enjoy your commentaries – part nostalgic part revolutionary.
I always feel a tinge of nostalgia as I cut into a postcard of this age and always hope that I’m doing it justice. I like to think that I’m giving them a new lease of life
Just check you’re not cutting into a penny black on the other side! π Such a quaint card and I can’t imagine Gravesend looking like this now. I bought a few birthday cards today and they are nothing like this which is much more charming. Another good one π
