The final cut in the series, this one took rather longer than the rest as I decided to do the colouring using collage pieces cut out from Friday night’s Evening Standard. The overall look was a lovely stained glass effect.
I was really sad to have to cut the original up as both Elena and I loved the effect, so I’ve included it here for posterity.
The piece was made by cutting small pieces out and sticking them on with PVA glue. The only thing I didn’t think of was that, once the piece was done, colouring was not going to stick to the layer of PVA, hence why the remainder is lightly coloured. I didn’t want to use Sharpie on it as felt that would have been too heavy.
Just in case you want to recreate this piece for yourself and want to match colours, you’re in luck because it turns out that all the images I used were adverts so you should be able to get hold of them again. All the blues for the boat and the sea were Owen Wilson’s shirt in the new Zoolander 2 poster, while the browns for the seashore came from the poster for The Martian.
It’s only the sky that may give you a little trouble if you can’t get hold of Friday’s Evening Standard, as that came from a festival advert that I can’t quite remember. Best of luck with the recreation and please post links to your replicas in the comments!
The mosaic collage effect is a nice departure – like it.
A very good effect indeed, how long did it take to make?
No idea. I done the trace one day and the collage colouring took ages but I got so into it I had no recollection of the time passing. 3 hours perhaps?
